The first word I learned to say is guaita. My paternal grandmother would take me for a walk in the trolley, and as we wandered around she would point at things with her finger and say: “Guaita Laia, guaita!”. She spoke a particular Catalan, she would say guaita instead of mira (look at). Guaitar means to watch carefully, analysing what is observed. Vigilant. Jo guaito 👀️

I wrote this manifesto while working at PlayGround and would explain it to the students at the master Postgráfica and at Complot. The manifesto could be a tool to set a common ground, to easily understand where to think from in order to achieve impact when working with creativity on social media. 

It was also my proposal to the Royal College of Art. The topic changed through the programme (see Fading Planes and The Sky Is Reachable Because I Can’t Fly), although there are common ideas and concerns about the digital image.


1 Diagnosis


We are saturated with images. Infinite content is produced and placed in an infinite scroll, with little care. This content is collapsing us and polluting our environment. Everything screams because everything competes for our attention and must be clickbait. Texts are no longer read; videos and gifs form the mosaics of our feeds. The passive eye is our main sense. And all these images posted create dialogues that shape the Internet and the information living in it. But who is talking? There is a proliferation of irresponsible voices: the trolls.

2 Possible causes


Every cell phone owner is a media outlet, the image has been democratized. The figure of the anti-director has appeared. Someone who does not lead, who admits plurality, who is a communicator, not an artist, and shares and represents a reality.

3 Possible consequences



  1. Negative: contamination of attention and behavior, spiritual mess.
  2. Negative and positive: empathy: it allows us to connect with the willings of people on a practical level and activate change of habits.
  3. Positive: release through the non-filter/non-filtered, non-production/non-produced.
  4. Positive: Empowerment of the young.

4 Proposal


To generate a methodology to understand and manage the use of the image. Can we actively be responsible of/for the images we generate, both our own and those adopted from others? I believe achieving and using this responsibility can be therapeutic, caring, something that heals understanding. Without sensible-educated beings it is impossible to live ecologically, using and producing only what is necessary. And who should determine what is necessary?


How should the editors and curators apply their criteria responsibly and fairly?

How can we be ecologists without a need for authority (censorship/echo chamber+filter bubble/post and publication restriction mechanisms)?
